Current owner Katy Azar continues to prepare tender kebabs and savory dips from her mother’s recipes. If you must choose, try the lentil soup, the gyro melt and, of course, hummus.

  • Babs' Pizzeria

    1319 Highway 2 Sandpoint

    208-265-7992

Head over to Sandpoint when you need more than just another cheese pizza. New York-style, thin-crust pizza is the name of the game at this pizzeria, which offers specialties like the Village (pesto, sun-dried tomatoes, artichokes, crumbled feta), the Little Italy (marinara, sweet sausage, green peppers, red onions) and the Hell’s Kitchen (spinach, roasted red peppers, mushrooms and chicken), which blend flavors that demand another visit. • Baby Bar

    827 W. First Ave. Spokane - Downtown

    509-847-1234

The Baby Bar is possibly the best dingy, dark, windowless dive bar in town. They reel in a delightful crowd of youngish punks/hipsters/art-types and serve cheap-yet-hard drinks, so consider a cocktail with fresh fruit squeezed right in front of you. They regularly have a live band for cheap, if not free. Also, Baby Bar happens to be connected to Neato Burrito, so there are burritos to satisfy your munchies, as well as poetry night on Wednesdays for you intellectual types. (July 2013)
  • The Backyard Public House

    1811 W. Broadway Spokane - Downtown

    509-822-7338

The Backyard takes over the former home of the Broadway Bar and Grill, and the former dive bar has been overhauled, both physically and gastronomically. The spot exudes the feel of a neighborhood pub, serving the sort of creative (yet affordable) cuisine that might come as a surprise. With interior walls of reclaimed wood from Kettle Falls, high wooden tables and warm lighting, there's a comforting vibe that's easy to sink into. It's also managed to pull three chefs formerly of Luna on the South Hill, who've created a menu of upscale comfort food like chicken and waffles, mac and cheese and a tasty pub appetizers. • Badass Backyard Brewing

3115 N. Butler Rd., Millwood Spokane Valley

    208-659-6946

Charlene Honcik is taking the term “homebrewer” to a whole new level. Her brewery, Badass Backyard Brewing, celebrated its grand opening in a detached shop at her home in Millwood earlier this month. Don’t be fooled by the location, though; the taproom is as bona fide as they come, and she already has six brews on tap. So far, the brewery is only open on Saturdays, but Honcik (the badass herself) has her sights set on a higher capacity brewing system and an off-site pub in the future.
  • Baek Chun Sushiyama

    13032 W. 14th St. Airway Heights

    509-624-5553

A sushi chef can have his fish sent from Seattle or Sydney or wherever. He can have it overnighted to his doorstep. But that’s not good enough for Charlie Yamamoto. To make sure he’s offering the freshest fish, he drives to Seattle every week to personally examine every fish he buys. So you know the sushi is fabulously fresh, and the bulgoki, yakisoba, udon, bibimbop and donburi are good, too.
